It is expected to clarify the Vatican's stance on some of the issues that came out of the recent Synod on the Family, which caused some speculation that the Catholic Church was softening its approach to homosexuality and divorce. At the same time, framing this passionate and unrelentingly civil Christian leader as a hateful bigot in the style of Jerry Falwell is unacceptable and counter-productive. He has even compared same-sex couples marrying to incest and child abuse. The alternative storyline is really unthinkable. The only flaw in this logic is that social conservatives rarely play by the same rules because they think they represent God.
So, at this point in his rocket-propelled career, it is unwise to bet against the political instincts of Barack Obama.
